While technology has its place, our communities, quiet spaces and natural resources matter more. That’s why so many Michigan communities are pushing back – and they have some really good reasons.

Data centers don’t just take up space: They require a staggering amount of resources to stay cool and run 24/7. When a massive data center moves into town, it changes the dynamic of the area:

  • They gulp water: Many of these centers use millions of gallons of water a day just to keep the computers from overheating. In a state defined by our beautiful lakes and clean groundwater, neighbors are rightfully asking what that means for our local water tables.
  • They strain our grid: They pull an incredible amount of electricity. Neighbors are concerned that this massive energy demand could lead to higher utility bills and put a strain on our power supply.
  • The constant hum: These places require massive industrial cooling fans running constantly. Communities that have already welcomed them report a non-stop, low-frequency hum that changes the peaceful, quiet feel of a neighborhood.

  • Local Impact: Whether our community’s infrastructure can truly handle a development of this size without disrupting the character of the area we love.
